MOUND CITY — Linn County sheriff’s deputies helped end a short standoff with a man in the Trading Post area after answering a call for help from Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center staff members Friday. Sheriff Barry Walker provided details about the incident during the Linn County Commission meeting Monday. Mental health officials told a Sheriff’s Department dispatcher that a person in the Trading Post area had contacted them requesting help and wanting to be hospitalized, but the man had said that if police officers showed up, he would shoot them and kill himself with a knife, Walker said. Several deputies went to the home with a search warrant. Chief Detective Gary Stone was able to persuade the man by phone to come out with his hands up, Walker said. A handgun was found but was later returned to its owner, the man’s father. The man was released to officials at Osawatomie State Hospital. Prior records show that he has a history of assaulting law-enforcement officers, the sheriff said. Walker said everyone involved in the operation gained some experience. While two officers approached the house, Deputy Russ Gardner was about 100 yards away with a rifle ready to take action if the man were to shoot at authorities. The sheriff said that the point he was trying to make is that there are times when a precision rifle operator is needed. Walker also provided commissioners with information on additional training he thinks would benefit new deputies.
