MOUND CITY — A rural Centerville resident asked the Linn County Commission Monday to make good on a previous commission pledge to replace road signs in his area. During public comment, Fred Kautt said it had been nearly two years since he presented the commission with pictures showing the condition of Centerville street signs. Now signs are in extremely bad condition, he said — some are no longer up at all, and others are not readable. He asked commissioners to place the issue on an agenda because a lack of signs could be a serious concern in an emergency. They agreed to put it on the Jan. 25 agenda. Commissioner Mike Page said there are other unincorporated communities that either do not have road signs or have signs that cannot be read. In other business, the commissioners Monday: Approved moving next week’s meeting to Tuesday because the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is Monday. Approved installing railroad signals and gates at 800 Road. Approved County Attorney John Sutherland’s request to change secretary Christine Chapman’s position to a legal secretary/paralegal, Range 5. Reviewed the Linn County Park budget report for 2009. The expenditures for the year were $234,883 and receipts $248,536. Approved paying about $3,830 in annual dues to Southeast Kansas Regional Planning Commission out of the county’s economic development budget. Approved providing letters of support for two grants for Tri-Ko Inc. The money would pay for new buses and be used for reimbursements for administrative functions. Approved buying four tires for the Mound City Rescue 1 vehicle. Approved declaring as surplus property a 2003 Crown Victoria traded to Cox Motor Co. of Pleasanton for a new patrol car more than a year ago. Paid annual dues of almost $2,700 to the Kansas Association of Counties for 2010. Approved paying Wes Ogle nearly $43,300 from community development block grant funding for work on the Prescott fire building. Signed paperwork for public officials’ bond insurance through Kansas County Association Multi-line Pool (KCAMP). Discussed e-mail from KCAMP concerning $2,000 available for counties for activities that help reduce liability, such as tarps and new rear-view mirrors on trucks. Asked County Counselor Gary Thompson to draft a resolution for construction and demolition landfill fees to include a minimum of $15 per load up to 1 ton and then $15 per ton after that. Approved paying Dan Purinton $900 for termite treatment at the Blue Mound show-up building.
