PARKER — The Parker City Council responded Thursday when Mayor Bob Orth asked it to rethink its move to raise sewer rates for Parker Elementary School but not for a local business. The school faces a sewer-rate increase of 100 percent starting July 1. The council notified the school of the hike at its November meeting. In December, the council voted to not raise sewer rates for the 1-Stop convenience store. Orth told the council last week that he did not think it is right to raise one business’ rate 100 percent and let another one get by without an increase. Council members on Thursday discussed state cuts to school budgets and decided to rescind the motion made in November and leave the school’s sewer rate the same. The issue of increasing business sewer rates came up last fall after residents’ minimum sewer rates were increased in August from $10 to $26.50 per month. The rates were increased because it was necessary for the city to charge that amount in order to apply for a Community Development Block Grant for sewer improvements.
