LA CYGNE — Emergency Preparedness Committee Chairwoman Linda Meisel told the La Cygne City Council last week that she wanted to thank the people who helped during the electrical failure Jan. 7.

Meisel said firefighters pitched in to get city generators set up as quickly as possible. The electricity went off at 10:30 a.m., and by 12:30 p.m. generators were powering lights and heating the Community Building.

Even though no one came to the shelters because power was restored in the area by 4:30 p.m., Meisel said the teamwork was a good drill for the emergency organization. During the power failure this month, generators were supplied by Linn County.

Meisel reported that it would cost the city $40,000 to buy a 25-kilowatt generator for the Community Building and a 40-kilowatt unit for City Hall.

She also updated the council on the school storm-shelter situation. Prairie View USD 362 has hired an architect and structural engineer to determine the adequacy of the present shelter in schools at La Cygne and Parker, Meisel said.
