A thrift store can be different things to different people. Some might think it’s a stockpile of old used junk. For Jeff and LeAnn Stewart, it’s a place where the slightly used can get enough attention to be like new once more.

Hence the name of their store: Nice as New.

“We buy most of our stuff,” LeAnn said of the store’s stock of mostly refinished furniture. She added that she and her husband are very selective about what they accept.

Although the Stewarts’ shop has been open for more than a year, it recently changed operating hours. Previously open only two days per week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday, the store has effectively doubled its hours, adding Monday and Thursday to the schedule.

LeAnn and Jeff quit their full-time jobs to make it happen, but they said they’re confident in the business’ success.

“We feel good about what we’re selling,” LeAnn said. “We feel good about what we’re redoing. ... You’ve got to give it a shot and put your whole heart and soul in it.”

The hours aren’t the only thing doubling for Nice as New.

The Stewarts plan to reveal a new and improved store in mid-February, when they will double their floor space.
With that will come bigger-ticket items, such as dining-room sets and pieces that would qualify for a new layaway program.

Much of the couple’s success so far, LeAnn said, is owed to several other businesses in town who mention the store to customers.

A Nice as New Web site is under construction, and the Stewarts are taking e-mail addresses so they can send alerts about deals and new items to patrons.
