LINN VALLEY – The process that would create a separate tax district for the Linn Valley Fire Department is near completion, the Linn Valley City Council learned last week. At the council’s March 8 meeting, City Attorney Gary Thompson told council members that the fire department’s petition is ready to be approved by the Linn County Commission. Once the petition is approved, Linn Valley residents would no longer be taxed for Linn County fire protection. Instead, the city could levy its own tax for fire protection. Thompson asked if the council wanted to wait. If they go ahead with it now, there will be time to get past the protest period and the new taxes will be reflected on 2011 property taxes. In a separate matter, Thompson updated the council on another current project. “The personnel manual is not quite finished, but will only require two to three hours more to be completed,” Thompson said. In other business, the city council: Approved renewal of city insurance with Linn County Insurance after discussing changes with Paul Myers and Christine Teagarden.
