The end of the Streetscape Project is near; we can all see it, we can all feel it, but the closer it gets, the longer the wait feels.

This has been best exemplified by the impatience and indifference shown by local drivers in the construction area. Rather than take the extra time on a detour around the obstructed Fifth and Sixth Street intersections, a fair number of motorists have opted to instead forgo the posted barriers for the sake of convenience.

Now we’d be lying if we said we weren’t among those irked by the barricades in place; inconvenience is rarely a fact of life our culture deals with in a happy manner. All the same, they were put in place for a reason: safety.

Construction crews are in the final stages of the Streetscape Project, which so far has progressed without a major accident or injury. However, the current phase puts workers practically in the middle of some of the busiest intersections in the community; the blockades have been put in place to help give these workers a buffer zone between themselves and the traffic as they make the final push in our downtown face lift.

The Osawatomie Police Department has already produced numbers to show just how many drivers they’ve caught ignoring the barricades in a short period of time, but it’s not much of a stretch to think far more go undetected. If the $110 fine doesn’t act as enough of a deterrent, we can all agree the safety of these workers should be a top priority; so for now, with the end of the project so close, take the time and go around the construction if necessary, and obey the posted signs and barricades. An extra minute or two really isn’t that much to ask.
