Zack Grimes had blood rushing down his face after going for a takedown against Blue Valley West’s Pat McCann during their 189-pound semifinal match Saturday in the Osawatomie Wrestling Invitational.

Grimes, in the process, was struck in the back of the head by McCaan. Blood started gushing from the back of
Grimes’ head, and he had to be tended to by trainer John Pomatto.

Ken Sumrall and Derrick Shelby are two of many greats who have stepped onto the hardwoods for the Osawatomie High School boys’ basketball team over the years, and the two helped the Trojans own a distinction few schools across the state can boast: players scoring 50 points in a game.

The two legendary Trojans will be coming back to Osawatomie High School from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 12 to join Steven Michael Farney, author of the book, “Club 50: 50 Point Single Game Scorers in Kansas High School Basketball History,” for a book signing. Books will be available for purchase for $25 each, tax included. For each book that is sold, $5 will be donated to OHS.

The Osawatomie High School boys’ junior varsity basketball team kept pace with Baldwin for one half during its Jan. 26 home contest, but the Bulldogs used an 11-3 third-quarter run to go on to a 59-43 victory.

Osawatomie had no problems getting on the score sheet in the first half, trailing just 19-16 after one quarter and 35-29 at halftime.

The defense for the Osawatomie girls’ basketball team kept an athletic Harrisonville, Mo., squad at bay in limiting them to just 16 points during the first half of Saturday’s fifth-place game in the Wildcat Invitational in Louisburg.

The third quarter was a different story.

The volleyballs were flying Sunday as the Junior Slammers, an Osawatomie-based volleyball club, held a 15-through-18-year-old girls’ tournament at the high school.

Five Junior Slammers teams took to the court, and all five walked away with at least one win.

In the 16-year-old Silver Division, the Junior Slammers 15-1 squad, coached by Shelly Newport and Ashley
