Bakeries in Mill District

Rise & Rye Bakery

A two-person bakery whose sourdough sells out by ten, and deserves to.

We arrived at 8:15 on a Saturday and joined a line of about a dozen people. It moved quickly. The counter is small, the menu is chalked on a board, and everything on it is baked on site.

The country sourdough is the reason to come. The crust shatters, the crumb is open and slightly tangy, and a loaf stayed good for three days. The cardamom buns are the other standout: sticky, fragrant and not too sweet.

Prices are fair for the quality. A loaf and two buns came to $14. If you want sourdough, get there before ten.

What's good

  • Sourdough with a deep, crackling crust
  • Cardamom buns made fresh every hour
  • Staff who will tell you what came out of the oven last

What's not

  • Lines out the door on weekends
  • No seating, so plan to take it with you
