“Bad Ischl, this picturesque town with an impressive imperial villa, is very strongly connected to the image of Sissi,” reveals choreographer David Pompana, adding that he “didn't want to tell a specific story about the empress.” The Vienna Philharmonic is responsible for the New Year's concert for the fourth time. “As a starting point, I imagined a noble, powerful woman” who experienced “love, lightness and freedom” in a daydream. Bombana, on the other hand, describes the Ziehrer waltz “Citizen of Vienna” as a “homage to dance” for five couples.

Davide Pompana trained at La Scala Ballet School in Milan. Engagements as a dancer have taken him to the Scala di Milano, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Scottish Ballet, the London Festival Ballet and the ballet of the Bavarian State Opera. In 1998/99 he headed the dance department of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. After he had already emerged as a choreographer in Munich, he has created numerous ballets for companies around the world. Since 2020 he has been the ballet director of the Teatro Massimo Palermo.

The extraordinary and most valuable costumes come from Susanne Piszowski, whom ballet director Martin Schlaffer already wore in 2023 for his opera ball choreography “Wiener Blood” and his Strauss ballet “Marsh, Waltz, Polka”. “Seventh Himmel” is back on the schedule at the Vienna State Opera as part of the 2024 program, commissioned with costumes. For the first time, the Vienna-based costume designer has now taken on a New Year's concert ballet design.
